Trinity Art Group

Attending Art class at the Trinity Winchester has helped me enormously. I suffer with Bipolar Disorder and the art has given me the chance to interact with others helping me with the loneliness I would experience otherwise. Also, I find art has a very calming, therapeutic effect on me and the chance to exhibit my work both at the Trinity and at the Tate Modern has given me a lot of self-confidence. I find the answer to keeping well, for me, is to keep busy and I find art is something I can do both in class and at home too.

Reflections Music Album

As a creative person I not only paint and draw but I write my own music and have sung in a couple of rock bands. I write a lot of poetry too and have had some poems published.

Reflections is my 2nd album I began writing it back in 1999 it revolves around my life experiences, my environment and my family. It started out as a response to the Millennium Song For Winchester competition.

I have decided to upload a few examples of my lyrics as my music is as important as my visual art practice.

CAMELOT REVISITED

Winchester, your history
Shrouded deep in mystery,
Kings and knights, their spirits come,
To greet the dawn of the millennium.

And did King Arthur and Guinevere,
Preside at the round table here?
And King Alfred burn the cakes to brown,
His mind so intent on England’s crown?

And what of brave Sir Lancelot,
Where would he find his Camelot?
Where knights would fight with bravery
Today it’s just a lottery!

And if King Alfred walked these streets,
What would he say to those he meets?
Would he recognise it all
As England’s oldest capital?

Winchester, your city stands,
A shining tower throughout the land,
Where old and new go hand in hand,
To suit the 21st century man.

And if King Alfred walked these streets,
What would he say to those he meets?
Would he recognise it all,
As England’s oldest capital?

COLOURS OF MY MIND

This song was written about my Bipolar Disorder and was inspired by my eagerness to explain who the real me is.

Colour my mind golden
Like the sunshine in the morning
Like the day when it is dawning
Going through the colours of my mind.

Oh yes, I’m going through the colours of my mind
When my mood is high
I’m having a good time
Going through the colours of my mind.

Colour my mind ebony
Like despair for all eternity
Like emptiness and misery
Going through the colours of my mind.

I’m going through the colours of my mind
When my mood is low
There ain’t no use in tryin’
Going through the colours of my mind.

Through shades of gold and ebony
My moods they change so easily
From emptiness to harmony
Sometimes it seems the same to me.

I’m going through the colours of my mind
From gold to ebony, from low to high
The more the colours change, the more I try,
To find the shade of colour in between –
To find the shade of colour that is me!

FANTASY GIRL

This song is about me and how I tend to live in a fantasy world, a daydreamer.

She lives in a world of her own making
She lives in a world inside her head
The real world is there just for the taking
But the real world just fills her full of dread.

CHORUS
Fantasy girl in your fantasy world
You can’t live your whole life in a dream
Wake up to the real world fantasy girl
It’s really not as bad as it may seem.

She spends all her nights restlessly dreaming
She spends all her days just making plans
But dreams and schemes ain’t worth the time you’re wastin’
The future of your life lies in your hands.

CHORUS
INSTRUMENTAL BREAK
CHORUS X 2

GYPSY EYES

This was originally written as a love poem to David Essex but I later set it to music for the album.

Gypsy eyes
Looking at me
Gypsy eyes
Oh can’t you see?

How my soul
Longs to be free
To spend the night
Just loving thee.
INSTRUMENTAL BREAK
Gypsy eyes
Looking at me
Gypsy eyes
Oh can’t you see

How my soul
Longs to be free
To spend the night
Just loving thee.

And when the sun
Breaks through the skies
To gaze upon
Your gypsy eyes.

And when the sun
Breaks through the skies
To gaze upon
Your gypsy eyes.

I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE

This song was written for my estranged children who I lost touch with after the breakup of a violent relationship with their father.

CHORUS
I can’t live without your love
What you doin’ to me now?
I can’t live without your love
What you doin’ to me now?

I thought I’d found a happy life
Thought I’d be somebody’s wife
Doesn’t change the way I feel
My love for you is just as real.

CHORUS

All those years I cared for you
In the bad times pulled you through
Now I’ve found a love that’s true
You cast me aside like a worn-out shoe.

CHORUS

I tried to make a brand new start
I thought that you would play a part
It’s hard to live with a broken heart
Missing you’s tearing me apart.

You are my children
You are my children

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK
CHORUS

I can’t live without your love
I can’t live without your love
I can’t live without your love
I can’t live without your love.

OBSESSION

I wrote this song after watching a TV programme about obsessed fans of famous people it inspired me to write a sad song about what obsession could lead to.

She stands like a statue
At the corner of the stage
Totally alone
Though in a crowd.

She gazes transfixed
Waiting for her hero to arrive
He strides through the mist
And she screams out loud.

Cos she’s his No. 1 fan
And he’s her No. 1 man
And she’d do anything
Just for a touch of his hand
If she can’t have him for her own
Then she must live her life alone
Getting by the best way that she can.

Another year, another tour
She’s waiting there by the stage door
They share a joke
As he signs an autograph.

Another town, another tour
She’s more eager than before
She’s managed to acquire
A backstage pass.

Her life is just a circle
Of one night stands
In different towns
As she follows her idol round and round.

All she wants is to be his bride
Be forever by his side
She can’t accept reality
She lives within her fantasy
Getting by the best way that she can.

Finally the tragedy
Her obsession’s gone too far
She follows him
As he goes to his car.

She pulls the gun
And fires two shots
With deadly accuracy
One for my darling and one for me.

SAMANTHA

My daughter Samantha asked me to write a song for her so here it is, she’s the only one of my children that I see regularly.

Samantha… you came into my life
You were so perfect
My little baby girl, my little rosebud
So beautiful, you’re everything to me.

I can’t believe
They took you away from me
You were my world
My reason to be…. Samantha

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

I can’t believe
The woman you’ve become
So brave and so strong
You’ve weathered all the storms.

You took all the pain
And bore it like your Mum
Now you’re a mother
With children of your own…. Samantha

(spoken) I love you

THE CHILD INSIDE

I wrote this song after undergoing counselling sessions when my counsellor told me I was burying all the hurt inside me like a child inside and that I had to learn to deal with the past before I could look to the future.

She puts a mask on to the world
She hides her tears behind a smile
But still she cannot hide
The child inside, the child inside.

The hurt and pain lie buried deep
It’s the secret that she keeps
But still she cannot hide
The child inside, the child inside.

She craves the love she never knew
She searches for it constantly
For still she cannot hide
The child inside, the child inside.

If only she could find release
Then her soul would be at peace
There’d be no need to hide
The child inside, the child inside.

CHORUS

The child inside,
The child inside,
The child inside,
The child inside.

TWIST OF FATE

This song was written about a relationship that should never have been and is the only rock number on the album.

He’s a man of steel
With a heart of gold
With a stare to make
Your blood run cold.

Yet the flames of passion
That burn within
Send fingers of flame
Dancing ‘cross my skin.

CHORUS
It’s a twist of fate
A twist of fate
My head says no
But my heart can’t wait.

Tumbling locks
Of burnished gold
Eyes of ice
Piercing cold.

His kisses burn
To my very soul
With a heat to melt
The winter snow.
CHORUS
He’s a magic man
A magic man
He’ll steal your heart away
As fast as he can.

And lock it up
In his magic box
And seal it safely
With ‘forever’ locks.

CHORUS

I waited so long
To see you again
I thought of you often
And prayed you weren’t gone.

When I held you
In my arms again
I loved you now
As I’d loved you then.

CHORUS

Fate the strange taskmaster
Twists her fickle finger
And I’m once again
With my rock ‘n roll singer
CHORUS
It’s a twist of fate
A twist of fate
My head says no
But my heart can’t wait.

WHEN LOVE FALLS APART

This song was written about when a relationship breaks up and is particularly poignant now after the breakup of my 2nd marriage.

Don’t it break your heart
When love falls apart
All the love you’ve known
Is broken up and gone.

When love falls apart
It’s breaking your heart
If only it were yesterday
Then it wouldn’t have to be this way.

Yesterday (yesterday)
We swore to lover forever
Come what may (come what may)
Then came the dawn (came the dawn)
And like a thief in the night
Our love it took flight.

Don’t it break your heart
When love falls apart
Happiness you’ve known
Is broken up and gone.

When love falls apart
When love falls apart
When love falls apart!

Reflections Artwork for Tate Modern

On the 10th May I exhibited a folder full of work for the Tate Modern. It contained 10 songs I had written and 10 photos which included some of my artwork to illustrate each song. The theme of the exhibition was "Journeys" and we were invited to display our artwork inside this large fabricated fishing boat.

This piece of work is related to my life journey, it is my holistic response using my music lyric writing/painting as milestones outlining my journey through life. The paintings reflect the things I like from celebrities I admire to fantasy art, the music lyrics reflect what I have suffered throughout my life and each song was written from the heart.

Tate Modern Exhibition Winchester School of Art "How To Biennale"

Vanessa and Me at Tate Modern

My Reflections Portfolio at Tate Modern
Back in May my art group was invited to collaborate with their Tate Modern Exchange Biennale. The theme was Journeys the reason for this was the artwork would be exhibited within the body of a large fabricated Kerala fishing boat in homage to the Biennale held in Kochi-Muziris, India. The art teacher said:

"The idea that the TAG artwork would be contained within the boat, as if it were a passenger, in turn acts as a metaphor for WSA’s inclusion of TAG; reaching out and bringing the  group on-board – to experience a journey together, all the way to the Tate Modern!"

I exhibited a handmade album exploring my life, my art and my music over the last 20 years - the work acts as a symbolic autobiographical journey!

Welcome to my blog

This blog acts as a portfolio for my artwork, I hope you enjoy it.

Modernist Fashion

On the 30th July 2018 we held a Summer Art Exhibition, called "Modist Modernism", featuring the artwork by various students by the Trinity Art group (TAG).

The theme was 20th century Modernism inspired by Sonia Delaunay and Laszlo Maholy-Nagy. I decorated a dress with abstracted designs, made with fabric pens and acrylic paint. My friend and fellow student Vanessa decorated a white T-shirt with heart, diamond, club and spade symbols painted with acrylic paint.

We also decorated lampshades with modernist designs. I painted mine with drawing ink making flower shapes and a butterfly. Vanessa decorated her lampshade with a colourful stripey design using wax crayons. Together Vanessa and I created a paper mache sculpture inspired by Laszlo Maholy-Nagy, entitled "The thing that goes ding".

Finally my exhibition contribution culminated with a large canvas echoing the designs I had created for my dress. On the day itself a Ukulele band played music to entertain the guests and we had canapes and fresh fruit. Several of the artworks sold. It was a successful afternoon and everyone enjoyed themselves.
